Career Coaching FAQ

What results can I expect from coaching?

Career coaching can help you:

  • discover what you love to do,
  • clarify what you’re meant to do,
  • explore your career options,
  • gain a renewed sense of direction, and
  • create a job search strategy that fits your personality and strengths

Basically, you get out of coaching what you put into it. As your career coach, I can help you discover, clarify, and evaluate your goals and options, as well as the steps needed to pursue them. But I can’t take those steps for you.

How does career coaching work?

In a nutshell, you start by identifying your goals, and then you figure out the steps you’ll take to move from where you are now to where you want to be. But first you must know what you want. An important part of the career coaching process is helping you develop your vision of who you want to become. As your career coach, I also support and empower you to move through the fears and self-doubts that will probably come up as you move forward.

Tell me more about the coaching process.

Individual coaching sessions take place over the phone, and are usually scheduled weekly or bi-weekly. Most clients choose to have 3 sessions a month, but your coaching package will be tailored for you. You’ll get the most benefit out of coaching when you come to each session knowing what you want to focus on and being prepared to explore options. As the client, it’s your responsibility to call me at the scheduled time. It’s my responsibility to support you and your goals, as well as to challenge you to stretch beyond your comfort zone and break free of old beliefs and patterns of behavior.

How long will it take?

The time it takes to see results is different for each person. If you have a very specific goal, it may take only one or two sessions to see results. But if you wish to go through all phases of the career change process, you’ll find that it will take at least 3 to 6 months to make significant changes. And some clients end up staying on for more than a year – they appreciate having an ongoing partner as they transition into their new careers or businesses.

It’s your choice, but committing to a period of time can help you remain focused on achieving your goals and keep you from neglecting your dreams one more time. It’s a matter of how much commitment you want to make to yourself.

What calling options do I have if I don’t live in the U.S. or have a reasonable long-distance phone plan?

A prepaid calling card may provide a cheaper alternative to traditional long distance services. If you don’t live in the U.S., an international calling card could save you some money.

Another option is Skype, a free software program that allows you to call other Skype users anywhere in the world, free of charge. To use Skype, you’ll need to have a computer with a reliable DSL or cable broadband connection, plus a headset. You can use the microphone and speakers that came with your computer, but the quality may not be as good.

What happens once I decide to work with you?

If you decide to hire me as your coach, I will email you a coaching agreement which details your coaching package, as well as basic guidelines for our coaching relationship. It is not a binding contract – I understand that your goals may change as time goes on and may need to be redefined. I will also request payment in advance (which could be for one session, one month, or longer, depending on which coaching option you choose). You may pay with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or PayPal.

Once I receive your signed agreement and payment, we’ll schedule a day and time for our first coaching session. I’ll also email you my Welcome Packet, which will include a welcome letter, plus several worksheets, exercises, and self-assessments, to send back to me at least 2 days prior to our first coaching call. Depending on the coaching package you choose, you will also receive your formal career assessments at this time.

What if I’m clear about the type of job I want? Can I skip the career discovery steps and focus entirely on job search strategies?

Absolutely! You can enter the Authentic Career Change™ program at any point.

I believe you’ll benefit the most from taking some time to explore who you are – your passions, life purpose, innate talents, and strengths. But if you’re sure what work would fit you best and are ready to focus on landing your next job, we can customize a career coaching package to meet your particular needs, whether it’s writing your resume, preparing for interviews, brainstorming networking strategies, or developing your brand. The emphasis will be on designing strategies that fit who you are.

How is coaching different from counseling or psychotherapy?

Coaching takes a positive, growth-oriented approach toward change, while counseling or therapy usually emphasizes healing problems that originated in the past. In coaching, you are seen as whole, resourceful, and well. The coach is your partner, rather than an “expert” who advises you or tells you what to do.

Coaching can include addressing fears, examining self-imposed limitations, and releasing roadblocks. But the focus is always on taking action and moving forward toward your goals rather than dwelling in the past. You’ll be encouraged to live in the present as you create your future. The purpose of career coaching is for you to make the most of your strengths and find work that fulfills rather than simply taking a job to match skills you may or may not want to use.

How much do you charge?

Since each person’s goals are different, I’ve decided not to post coaching fees on my website. Career coaching packages can be customized to fit your particular needs as well as budget. Your investment will also vary according to your time commitment. I’ll be glad to discuss these options with you on the phone. I think you’ll find my rates to be quite competitive.

On your website you talk about changing careers after 50. Do you work with people under 50?

Yes. My clients are generally between the ages of 45 and 65, but age in itself is not important. What matters is that you truly want a career that’s an authentic expression of who you are, and that you are willing to commit yourself to the career coaching process. For more information about the people I work with, see Who Are My Clients.
