Creatively Redesigning Your Life

by Janet Cranford

"Scattered puzzle pieces next to solved fragment" by Horia Varlan, on FlickrI approached my first midlife career change as a problem to be solved, instead of appreciating it for what it could be – an opportunity to redesign my life.

Like so many people, I based my early career decisions on what seemed practical at the time. The path I ended up taking had nothing to do with my values or interests. I wasn’t even sure what those were. So after almost 20 years, I had completely bought into the story of my life as an accountant.

My career change didn’t happen overnight. But as I explored who I was underneath the roles I was playing so well, my perspective began to change. I could see possibilities where once there were problems.

Gradually I lived into my new life, one that I designed based on the things that were most important to me. I could finally tell the story I wanted to tell.

Shifting Gears at Midlife

If you’re ready to create your next chapter, or to turn your work into a calling, you’ll want to check out an e-Course called Shifting Gears at Midlife: Creating an Extraordinary Future. Dr Frank Bonkowski and Dr. Fred Horowitz have put together a five-week multimedia online course that will help you create a new story for your life.

They show you how to transform your life through deeper self-understanding and purposeful action based on your values and interests. The course includes a wealth of interactive lessons and exercises that I found both fun and thought provoking.

You can find other courses, articles, and podcasts to help you creatively redesign your life at Dr. Frank’s website, Happiness After Midlife.

How would you rewrite your story?
